Nairobi County’s Head of Customer Care Department, Geoffrey Mosiria, has slammed police officers over the continued manufacture and sale of a deadly illicit brew commonly known as Kill-Me-Quick in Mathare.

In a statement shared via his X account on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Mosiria expressed outrage that the illegal activity was taking place openly despite the presence of law enforcement officers tasked with protecting the public.

“It is deeply unfortunate and unacceptable that this is happening openly under the watch of officers entrusted with public safety. Even more disturbing is the use of sewer water to manufacture this deadly brew. This is a tragedy unfolding in plain sight,” Mosiria said.

He warned that if authorities failed to act, he would personally intervene to end the impunity surrounding the illicit alcohol trade.

“Very soon, if no action is taken, I will personally be on the ground to bring this impunity to an end once and for all, especially if the officers assigned to act choose to remain silent,” he stated.

Mosiria said the damage caused by the brew far outweighed any benefits gained by those profiting from it, noting that many families had already been devastated.

“The number of lives lost far outweighs the few beneficiaries of this cheap, poisonous liquor. Our people are dying, families are being destroyed, and yet some individuals continue to profit without shame,” he said.

He directly addressed local security and administrative officers, questioning whether they were aware of the situation and why no action had been taken.

“Area OCS, Area DCC, Area Chief, I hope you have neither seen this nor been informed about it. Because if you have, and nothing has been done, then serious questions must be asked,” Mosiria said.

Mosiria also called on the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) to take immediate action in Mathare, stressing that residents’ lives could not be compromised.

“Our people’s lives are not negotiable. This is the application of chemistry in a wrong experiment,” he stated, adding that he was ready to confront powerful individuals behind the illegal operations if necessary.

The Kill-Me-Quick brew is a form of chang’aa, a potent locally brewed spirit made by fermenting and distilling grains such as maize, millet and sorghum. While traditional chang’aa has a long history in Kenya, the Kill-Me-Quick variant circulating in slum areas is often adulterated with toxic substances including methanol, jet fuel, formalin, battery acid and other industrial chemicals to boost potency and profits.

The water used in illegal operations is frequently contaminated with sewage and other filth, making the brew extremely hazardous to health.
