Mosiria appeals to developers to comply with law following South C building collapse

By , January 3, 2026

Nairobi County’s Citizen Engagement and Customer Care boss, Geoffrey Mosiria, has appealed to developers to strictly comply with the law following the collapse of a 16-storey building under construction in Nairobi’s South C area, warning that impunity in the construction sector continues to put lives at risk.

In a statement on Saturday, January 3, 2026, Mosiria recalled having previously raised concerns about unsafe developments, noting that his warnings were often dismissed as attempts to frustrate developers or undermine livelihoods in the construction industry.

“I have always said we must stop this kind of impunity. Do you remember when I posted this, and many people came out to say that I was frustrating developers? Some even claimed that I was “killing people’s hustle”, especially those working in the construction sector,” he stated.

According to Mosiria, the South C building collapse has once again demonstrated why adherence to building regulations is not optional.

He emphasised that construction laws exist to protect lives, property and investments, not to hinder development.

“These incidents clearly show why compliance with the law is a necessity,” he stated.

Mosiria urged developers to take responsibility and ensure all projects meet legal and safety requirements, stressing that development must go hand in hand with accountability.

“My appeal to all developers is simple: follow the law and do the right thing. Compliance saves lives and prevents avoidable losses,” he said.

The collapsed building

His remarks came hours after the Kenya Red Cross confirmed the building’s collapse in a statement shared on X on Friday, January 2, 2026.

The Kenya Red Cross noted that a multi-agency team had been dispatched for an operation with injuries and fatalities yet to be confirmed.

”Early this morning, a building under construction collapsed in the Shopping Centre area of South C, Nairobi County. A multi-agency response team is on site managing the situation,” the statement read in part.

This happens amid the ongoing heavy rainfall pounding most parts of the country, posing flood risks and related disasters.
