Former Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has called on Gen Z to travel upcountry ahead of the festive season and register as voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party Presidential candidate, urged all young people to get ready by ensuring they are registered voters.

“To the young people, my brothers and sisters, I encourage you to register as voters,” Matiang’i said.

On his part, Matiang’i asked Gen Z travelling upcountry to further take the initiative of reminding their peers residing in the rural areas of the importance of registering as voters.

“As you prepare to travel upcountry later this month for the festive season, please take a moment to register and remind your peers and families to do the same. Your future, and that of our nation, depends on your participation,” Matiang’i added.

New features in voters registration system

His call comes just months after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Ann Nderitu issued detailed outlines of new features in the voter registration system.

The Commissioner made her remarks on Monday, September 29, 2025, during an interview with a local media house, where she revealed that IEBC has improved the voter registration system.

On her part, the new system is supported by a single tablet, unlike the past system, which she states was bulky, while also adding that the new tablet has enhanced features built for the exercise that kicks off on Monday, September 29, 2025.

“What is different in this new voter registration is that we have a new system; right now, we only have a tablet. We will only be using a tablet to register voters, as we have also enhanced the features of that tablet,” Nderitu said.

Likewise, the IEBC Commissioner further revealed that the new registration system will not only be able to capture Kenyans’ fingerprints but also their iris, while also adding that the tablets also have more features.

“The registration system now is not only able to capture your fingerprints but also your eyelids; it can capture more features, and it is faster,” Nderitu said.

On her part, the previous system used in the 2022 general elections for registration was a bulky system that had a laptop and something that accompanied the whole system.
