KURA announces 4-month closure of Eldoret Road for bridge construction

Commuters in the capital are bracing for significant travel disruption after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced a lengthy closure of a key city artery.
In a public notice issued on Monday, May 11, 2026, the authority confirmed that a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi will be off-limits to all vehicular traffic for exactly four months.
The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 6 am on Monday, May 18, 2026, and is expected to remain in place until 6 pm on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The closure is essential to allow contractors to safely undertake a major infrastructure upgrade.
According to the official notice, the interruption is necessary to “allow the contractor to undertake the construction of a Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River”.
Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti signed off on the directive, noting that the agency is committed to its mission of “Transforming Urban Mobility”.

With thousands of motorists expected to be impacted by the work, the authority has urged the public to plan their journeys in advance and strictly adhere to the provided guidance.
“We urge motorists to use alternative routes as shown in the sketch,” part of the notice said.
Drivers are instructed to follow the guide by traffic police and marshals.
The authority expressed regret over the disruption, stating, “We apologise for the inconvenience caused as we endeavour to Transform Urban Mobility”.
KURA has encouraged any members of the public with queries regarding the closure to reach out via their official channels.
