Kenya Met warns of strong winds and rough sea conditions along coastal waters

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a seven-day marine forecast on Wednesday, May 13, warning of strong winds and changing sea conditions expected along sections of the Kenyan coast and neighbouring waters over the next seven days.

In a marine forecast covering May 14 to May 20, the department said some parts of the Western Indian Ocean region are likely to experience moderate to rough sea conditions that could affect marine activities. “South-south-easterly to south-south-westerly winds are expected over Somalia waters with wind speeds of 15 to 25 knots throughout the forecast period,” the department stated.

The report also noted that Kenyan and Tanzanian waters are expected to experience east-south-easterly to south-westerly winds with speeds ranging between 4 and 20 knots.

Wave heights expected to rise

According to the forecast, wave heights across Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania waters are expected to range between 0.25 metres and 2.5 metres during the period. “Slight to moderate sea conditions with wave heights of 0.25–2.5m is expected over the Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania waters throughout the forecast period,” the report added.

The department further warned that stronger winds may be experienced in some sections of Somali waters, increasing the possibility of rough sea conditions in open waters. Marine observers say such conditions can disrupt fishing activities and sea transport, especially for operators using smaller boats. Strong winds and rising waves also increase the risks faced by fishermen travelling far into the ocean.

Caution for marine operators

Beach operators, fishermen, and transport providers along the Coast have now been urged to closely monitor weather updates before heading into the sea. “Light breeze to fresh breeze wind speeds of 2–10 m/s expected over Kenya and Tanzania waters throughout the forecast period,” the statement highlighted.

The latest warning comes as coastal counties continue experiencing changing weather patterns linked to seasonal climate shifts affecting different parts of the country. Residents and marine users have been encouraged to remain alert and prioritise safety during the forecast period, especially in areas expected to record stronger winds and higher waves.
