Kenya Met warns of heavy rains across most regions in early May
By Paulette Mboga, May 1, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds expected across many parts of the country between May 1 and May 3, 2026.
The department advised residents to remain alert as wet conditions are likely to persist. The update highlights possible disruptions in different regions due to changing weather patterns.
According to the department, several areas will experience continued rainfall over the three days. Regions expected to be affected include areas in and around the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the coastal region, and parts of northeastern Kenya. The department explained that rainfall may intensify at certain times of the day, especially later in the day.
“Rain is expected to continue in many parts of the country, especially in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, and the North Eastern region,” Kenya Met said.

The forecast also pointed out that thunderstorms may occur alongside heavy rain in some locations. These conditions are likely to be more common in the afternoon and evening hours. The department noted that such weather could affect normal outdoor activities and travel plans.
“Some areas may experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening,” Kenya Met said.
Weather outlook and wind warning
In addition to rainfall, the department warned of strong winds expected in different parts of the country. It explained that winds from the south and south-east may reach speeds above 25 knots. These winds are expected to affect areas in the north-western, north-eastern, south-eastern lowlands, and the coastal region.

“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds (exceeding 25 knots) are expected in parts of the North Western, North Eastern, South Eastern lowlands, and the Coast,” Kenya Met said.
The department noted that strong winds may disrupt marine activities such as fishing and transport along the coast. It advised those in affected regions to take caution and plan accordingly. The weather alert aims to help people prepare and stay safe during the forecast period.
Following a heavy downpour, rising water levels have been reported along Mombasa Road (Eastern Bypass), resulting in flooding. In Mukuru kwa Njenga, there are unconfirmed reports of missing persons and marooned households.
