Kenya Met issues weather update for Monday, August 31: What to expect
By Dan Kauna, August 30, 2026Kenyans preparing for the last day of August can look forward to a largely stable start to the week across most regions, although a few areas should prepare for brief showers and cool morning conditions.
According to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department, most parts of the country are expected to remain generally dry.
The advisory also shows that sunny intervals will dominate afternoon hours in many counties, even as localised rains touch specific regions.
Central and coastal counties
Residents across Nairobi and the Central Highlands, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, and Nyandarua, will experience chilly night temperatures dropping to 9°C in Nyandarua and 13°C in Nairobi.
In the capital city, the skies will be partly cloudy, with a chance of light showers expected over few places, before opening up to cloudy skies and sunny intervals in the daytime.
Nairobi is expected to reach a maximum temperature of 23°C.
Along the Coastal strip, places like Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu will see maximum temperatures between 28°C and 29°C.
Forecast details indicate these areas will be partly cloudy with light showers expected over few places during the night, followed by gentle morning showers and sunny intervals later in the afternoon.
Northern regions
In Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin, sunny intervals will prevail for most of the day. Maximum temperatures will range from 24°C in Nakuru and Eldoret to 32°C in Kisumu and 33°C in Busia, giving residents favourable conditions for outdoor activities.
The Northern and Eastern parts of the country will remain warm and noticeably windy. Temperatures in Turkana will reach 36°C, while Mandera and Wajir will register 35°C and 33°C respectively.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties”.
Sunrise in Nairobi will be at 6:30 am with sunset at 6:35 pm, whereas Mombasa will see sunrise at 6:20 am and sunset at 6:22 pm.
