Kenya Met issues weather forecast for Saturday, August 22: Expect showers, chilly mornings and strong winds
By Dan Kauna, August 22, 2026Kenyans should prepare for contrasting weather conditions today, August 22, 2026, as cold morning temperatures hit central regions while northern areas experience high heat.
The daily report shows temperatures dropping as low as 9°C in Nyandarua and rising up to 36°C in Mandera and Turkana.
Expected rainfall and strong wind alerts
Several regions across the country will experience rainfall at different times of the day. According to the advisory, “Rainfall expected in some parts of Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Nyandarua, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu counties.”
Coastal towns like Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi will start the day with light morning showers before sunny intervals take over in the afternoon. In Bungoma, light rains are expected around Mount Elgon during the morning hours.

Rainfall is also projected to extend into parts of Western Kenya later in the day. Afternoon light showers and thunderstorms are expected in Kericho and Kakamega.
This follows recent weather data showing Kisumu recorded over 20 mm of rain in the 24-hour period leading up to August 21.
Besides the rain, strong winds will affect several low-lying and coastal counties.
The weather agency warned that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties.”
Temperature breakdown across major towns
A cool atmosphere will cover the central highlands and surrounding areas. The department noted that “Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Machakos, Makueni, Nairobi, Kajiado and Laikipia Counties.”
In Nairobi, residents can expect a cloudy morning with sunny intervals later in the day. Temperatures in the capital will peak at 26°C and fall to a minimum of 12°C at night. Sunrise in Nairobi is set for 6.33 am, with sunset expected at 6.37 pm.
Coastal residents in Mombasa will see maximum temperatures of 29°C and minimums of 22°C, with sunrise at 6.24 am and sunset at 6.24 pm.
Kisumu will record a high of 29°C and a low of 19°C, with sunrise at 6.40 am and sunset at 6.47 pm. Checking local forecasts helps residents plan daily travel and outdoor activities effectively.
