Kenya Met issues a strong wind warning for several areas on January 7
By William Muthama, January 7, 2026Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast strong winds and sunny intervals in parts of the country on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, with most regions expected to experience clear and sunny weather.
In its daily weather outlook issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Kenya Met said that strong northeasterly and southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) will affect Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir, Mandera, and several coastal counties.
Highlands
Much of the country will remain largely sunny, especially the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Meru, and Laikipia.
These areas are expected to have partly cloudy conditions at night, followed by sunny intervals throughout Wednesday, January 7, 2026

Isolated light showers may occur in a few regions, particularly around the Mt. Kilimanjaro area and parts of the Highlands west of the Rift Valley.
Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and western highlands, such as Kisumu, Kakamega, and Kericho, will experience mostly sunny intervals, with a few areas recording light rainfall at night or late in the afternoon.
Coastal heat
Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River, will experience warm and humid conditions, with strong winds expected to persist throughout the day.
Temperatures are expected to remain high in several towns, with Lodwar, Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir recording daytime highs above 35°C.
Nairobi is forecast to reach 27–28°C, while Kisumu, Mombasa, and other coastal towns will continue to experience hot and humid weather.
City-specific forecasts show temperatures ranging from a minimum of 8°C in Kericho to a maximum of 38°C in Wajir.

Sunrise and sunset times for major towns remain standard, with Nairobi seeing sunrise at 6:33 a.m. and sunset at 6:44 p.m.
The department emphasised that while most of the country will remain dry, residents in counties affected by strong winds and isolated showers should stay alert.
