Kenya Met forecasts rain, cold weather in Nairobi and other counties
By Valerian Khakayi, July 20, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has forecast rainfall, cool temperatures and cloudy conditions in Nairobi and several other counties over the coming days, with residents advised to prepare for changing weather patterns.
In its latest weather outlook issued on Monday, July 20, 2026, the department said rainfall is expected in parts of Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Bungoma, Bomet, Nyamira, Embu, Nyeri and Nairobi counties.
The forecast indicates that the rains are likely to be accompanied by cool conditions in some areas, especially in the Central Highlands, Nairobi and parts of the Rift Valley, where temperatures have remained low in recent weeks.
“Rainfall is expected in some parts of Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Bungoma, Bomet, Nyamira, Embu, Nyeri and Nairobi counties,” Kenya Met announced.
Intermittent cold condition
Kenya Met also projected intermittent cool and cloudy conditions in parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Kajiado and Makueni counties.
The department noted that residents in these areas should expect overcast skies for extended periods, with occasional sunshine breaking through during the day. Such conditions often result in lower daytime temperatures and chilly mornings and evenings.
Strong winds
Besides the rainfall and cold weather, Kenya Met warned that strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) are expected over parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Tana River, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
The strong winds could affect both inland and coastal areas, with residents encouraged to exercise caution, particularly when travelling or engaging in outdoor activities.
Motorists are also advised to drive carefully during rainy conditions due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.
Farmers in areas expected to receive rainfall may benefit from the forecast, particularly those engaged in crop production.
Rainy weather
The latest forecast indicates a continuation of the weather conditions experienced in recent days, with several parts of the country expected to continue receiving rainfall alongside cool and cloudy conditions.
Nairobi remains among the counties forecast to experience rain and lower temperatures, while parts of the Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza, Central and Eastern regions are also expected to receive showers. Meanwhile, strong southerly to southeasterly winds are likely to persist in parts of northern and coastal Kenya.
The continued wet and chilly conditions come as Kenya Met’s previous forecasts pointed to sustained rainfall across several regions, signalling that the current weather pattern is expected to persist over the forecast period.
