Geoffrey Mosiria warns against misused tree-hugging challenge

Geoffrey Mosiria has regretted that what environmentalist Truphena Muthoni started in good faith has been destroyed.
Taking to Facebook on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Mosiria has directly stated that many who are undertaking the tree-hugging challenge are after money rather than promoting environmental conservation.
Tree-hugging challenge misused
He said the trend, which began as a simple act to raise awareness for nature, has now turned into a platform for mischief and exploitation.
“Today, I had to intervene and stop one of the street families who was attempting to hug a mugumo tree at Green Park, next to our county dispensary, within the county offices area and near our stores,” he stated.
“According to information provided by our officers and his fellow street members who actually called for my intervention, this was intended as a cover while waiting for an opportunity to take advantage of the situation and steal.”

Mosiria further warned that some individuals are now soliciting money from Kenyans through the tree-hugging trend by sharing paybill and M-Pesa numbers.
“He called the practice dangerous, arguing that it encourages laziness and idleness instead of honest work. “If everyone decided to hug a mugumo tree, who would work?” he questioned.
The county official also emphasized that anyone engaging in such activities must first undergo a proper medical examination and receive clearance to ensure they are physically capable of enduring prolonged standing.
This measure, he said, is meant to protect participants from harm and maintain public order.

County stance on accountability
Mosiria issued a clear warning to the public, stating that no tree-hugging or similar challenges will be allowed without proper clearance and approval from the county government.
“Order, responsibility, and accountability must be upheld,” he said.
He reiterated that the county will continue to monitor such activities to ensure they do not become a cover for criminal behaviour or a means of exploiting citizens.
Mosiria’s intervention highlights the growing concern over unregulated social media trends being used for personal gain at the expense of community welfare.
Authorities are calling on the public to report any such incidents to ensure safety and integrity within the county.
