Geoffrey Mosiria warns against fake witch doctors, calls for regulation to protect Kenyans

Nairobi County government Citizen Engagement and Customer Care boss, Geoffrey Mosiria, has issued a public warning over the rising number of fake witchdoctors operating within the city, cautioning residents against falling victim to individuals who exploit desperation for financial gain.

In a statement on Monday, January 5, 2026, Mosiria said the county has received numerous complaints from residents about so-called witchdoctors advertising “miracle” services and instant solutions to personal and financial problems.

He described the trend as alarming, noting that several people have already been conned and psychologically manipulated by unscrupulous individuals posing as traditional healers.

“Let me be clear: this is a business that must be regulated. Some residents have already been conned and financially exploited by these individuals, who prey on desperation, mislead the public, and psychologically manipulate vulnerable people,” he stated.

He further expressed concern over how and where these services are advertised. According to Mosiria, most of the adverts are illegally placed on walls, electricity poles, road signs, and other public infrastructure, often under the cover of darkness.

“Many of these adverts are also put up at night, which raises serious questions about legitimacy and intent,” he added.

Mosiria emphasised that anyone claiming to offer legitimate services must comply with the law, like any other business, including applying for a unified business permit, obtaining licences from the relevant regulatory bodies, and advertising only in approved and designated areas.

The county official also appealed to Nairobi residents to help authorities identify and report fake witchdoctors.

He said public information will be critical to protecting others from being conned and restoring dignity and order within the city.

“I am calling upon city residents to help us identify and report these fake witchdoctors. Your information will help protect others from being conned and assist us in restoring order and dignity in our city,” he said.

Additionally, Mosiria has noted that the problem is growing rapidly and urged anyone who has encountered such adverts or been affected by the scams to report the matter to county offices for action.

“This issue is growing and alarming. Have you or someone you know been affected? Have you seen these adverts in your area? Report to us for further action to also protect innocent Nairobi and Kenyans at large!” Mosiria said.
