Gachagua offers condolences to Kiambu Senator following mother’s death

The mother of Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, Mama Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, has passed away at the age of 93 after developing breathing complications.
In a statement on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, described Mama Lucia as a devoted mother and family matriarch.
He revealed that Lucia was accompanied by her son, Senator Karungo Thang’wa, and her caregivers during her final moments.
“It is with deep sadness that I have learnt of the passing on of Mama Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, the mother of Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa,” read the statement in part.
“At the age of 93, Lucia rested this afternoon after developing breathing complications. Thang’wa,he was with her son, Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, and her caregivers in her final moments.”
Mama Lucia was widely remembered as a hardworking and dedicated mother who, together with her late husband, Stephen Kimani Thang’wa, a primary school teacher, raised 13 children.
Through her nurturing and guidance, she raised children who have gone on to serve society in different capacities, including Senator Karungo Thang’wa, Catholic priest Fr Michael Thang’wa, and global humanitarian Kihara wa Thang’wa, among other distinguished sons and daughters.
Her life has been described as a testament to resilience, sacrifice, and love, with many paying tribute to the impact she had on her family and the wider community.
“My heartfelt condolences go to Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, the entire Thang’wa family, relatives, and friends during this difficult time. May the soul of Mama Lucia rest in eternal peace and perpetual light shine upon her forever,” Gachagua stated.
