DCI arrests police recruit constable over Ksh687K fake KDF job scam
By William Muthama, February 8, 2026The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a police recruit constable over a Ksh687,000 employment scam involving a fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment letter.
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the DCI said detectives from Kayole Police Station apprehended the officer following a complaint from a member of the public who reported being defrauded while seeking employment in the military.
According to the DCI, the police recruit approached the complainant on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, claiming he could secure an official KDF employment letter at a cost of Ksh700,000.
The agency said the individual presented the offer as genuine, using his affiliation with the police service to gain the complainant’s trust.
DCI noted that the complainant sent Ksh687,000 in several transactions after being convinced the recruitment process was legitimate.
“Detectives from Kayole Police Station have arrested a police recruit constable accused of running a slick con that fleeced a member of the public of Sh687,000, all under the guise of securing an employment letter from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF),” DCI wrote.
Communication cut off
The DCI stated that shortly after receiving the money, the officer stopped communicating with the complainant and failed to deliver the promised employment letter.
The agency said repeated attempts by the complainant to reach him were unsuccessful, prompting a formal report to the police.
Following the complaint, detectives launched investigations and traced the individual to the National Police College, Embakasi A Campus, where he was arrested.
According to the DCI, the officer is currently in custody, undergoing processing ahead of arraignment. Preliminary investigations indicate that the individual exploited public trust and desperation for jobs in disciplined forces to carry out the scheme.
“Now cooling his heels in custody, he is undergoing processing as he awaits arraignment,” DCI noted.
In another similar incident, DCI also apprehended a person of interest linked to conning hopeful youths by issuing fake Kenya Defence Forces recruitment letters.
In a post on the official DCI X account on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the detectives announced that the operation carried out by Parklands detectives led to the key person of interest who has been parading himself as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) brigadier.
