Cloudy morning expected in Nairobi as rains hit Western and Coast on Sunday, September 27
By Dan Kauna, September 26, 2026Residents across coastal counties and the Lake Victoria basin should prepare for morning showers and localised thunderstorms on Sunday, September 27, 2026, while northern regions brace for gusty winds.
According to the daily forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, “light to moderate rains expected over few places across Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Trans Nzoia, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Lamu counties.”
Valid from 9:00 pm on September 26, 2026, to 9:00 pm on September 27, 2026, the forecast points to a wet start for the coastline alongside scattered afternoon showers in western Kenya.
Coast wet spells and western showers
Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River will wake up to morning showers over several places before conditions clear up into sunny intervals with occasional afternoon showers.
Daytime temperatures in Mombasa will reach a high of 29°C and a night minimum of 23°C, while Lamu will also peak at 29°C. Taita Taveta will experience morning light rains followed by light afternoon showers, with maximum temperatures touching 29°C.
Further west, counties such as Busia, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, and Siaya will enjoy sunny intervals during the day, though residents should expect light showers and thunderstorms over few places during the afternoon or night hours.
Kakamega and Kisumu will reach highs of 30°C and 32°C respectively, while Trans Nzoia remains mostly sunny throughout the day with a maximum temperature of 28°C.
Strong winds sweep northern counties as Nairobi stays mild
In the northern region, hot conditions will persist alongside noticeable atmospheric activity. The met department warned that strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) are to be expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit and Isiolo Counties.
Heat will remain intense in these areas, with Mandera hitting a maximum temperature of 38°C, Turkana touching 37°C, Wajir recording 35°C, and Garissa reaching 33°C.
Meanwhile, Nairobi and neighbouring central highlands like Kiambu, Murang’a, and Nyeri will experience cloudy mornings that clear into sunny intervals by afternoon. The capital city will record a daytime high of 27°C and an overnight minimum of 15°C.
Light afternoon showers are expected in a few places across Meru, Embu, Kirinyaga, and Kitui, while Nyandarua registers the coldest night in the country at 10°C.
