20 persons of interest on the run for slaughtering 34 donkeys in Kajiado
By Nancy Marende, February 9, 2026Police in Kajiado West are searching for more than 20 persons of interest who fled after slaughtering 34 donkeys illegally in Olorien village on Monday morning, February 9, 2026.
According to police reports, the suspects are believed to have been preparing to transport the donkey meat to Nairobi for sale to unsuspecting consumers.
Furthermore, two vehicles intended to ferry the meat to the city were abandoned at the scene and are now being held by police as exhibits.
Oloirien Location Chief Edward Mopel said the incident was not isolated, noting that similar activities have been reported in the area before.
“Kulingana na eneo hili, hii sio mara ya kwanza. Tulipata mashimo ambayo yanatumika kuzika matumbo ili kudisguise harufu na kuwazuia ndege. Ukiangalia mizoga iliyo hapa, sio fresh. Ni kitu wamekuwa wakifanya kwa muda katika eneo hili,” he stated.

Kajiado West Police Commander Maureen Kuto confirmed the illegal slaughter, stating that officers were unable to make arrests after the suspects spotted police vehicles approaching.
“There were around 34 donkeys that were illegally slaughtered by perpetrators of the law. We were not able to arrest them because they noticed us early due to the lights from our motor vehicles, and they disappeared,” said Kuto.
“We suspect the meat was being sold to unsuspecting Kenyans, possibly through Dagoretti and other parts of the city.”

On his part, animal rights activist Sylvester Wakhu condemned the incident, warning that the illegal operation posed a serious public health risk.
“What we have witnessed here is a real illegality. This was happening at night in bush areas, meaning the meat would have entered the food industry uninspected. This is a serious threat to public health,” Wakhu said.
