What happens when you swallow chewing gum
Most people who chew gum have faced this situation: you want to throw it away, but there is no bin or tissue nearby.
Sticking it under a surface feels inappropriate, so you end up swallowing it instead. This often raises a common concern. What actually happens after you swallow gum? There’s a long-standing myth that it can sit in your stomach for up to seven years.
According to Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials, taking in a single piece of gum once in a while is generally not dangerous. However, it should not become a regular habit, as frequent swallowing can lead to problems over time.

In the past, chewing gum was made from natural tree sap. Today, it is produced using gum base, a mostly synthetic material. This substance does not contain nutrients and cannot be broken down by the digestive system like normal food.
Does gum really stay in your stomach for years?
No. “You’d have to be experiencing some other medical condition for anything you swallowed to stay in your body for seven years,” Registered dietitian Beth Czerwony says. So don’t worry: Gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for seven years or even seven days.
“If you’ve swallowed a piece of gum, it’ll come out about 40 hours later in your stool,” Czerwony assures.
“Because it can’t be digested, it comes right out whole.”

While that may sound unusual, it is not entirely uncommon. The body often passes items it cannot fully digest, such as seeds, corn kernels and vegetable skins, without breaking them down.
When to be concerned
Although swallowing gum occasionally is unlikely to cause harm, doing it repeatedly can be risky. According to Czerwony, consuming multiple pieces in a short time, for example, one piece daily for several days or several pieces at once, can create complications in the digestive system.
This can be compared to a blocked pipe. When something gets stuck, it prevents other materials from passing through, leading to pressure buildup. If not resolved, the blockage can cause more serious damage.
The simplest way to avoid any issues is to dispose of gum properly instead of swallowing it. Whenever possible, use a tissue or find a trash can.
