For many people, weekends bring freedom, friends, and a break from routine. Bars and social spots become busy as people unwind after a long week.

Yet some nights that begin with laughter end in regret, empty wallets, arguments, or health scares. The problem is not always the venue. It is often the decisions made inside it.

Many weekend mistakes are predictable, preventable, and repeated every week.

Starting badly

One common mistake is arriving hungry and drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol is absorbed faster when there is little or no food in the stomach.

That can make intoxication hit sooner than expected and reduce judgment early in the night. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that food can slow alcohol absorption, which is why people may feel effects faster when they have not eaten.

Another mistake is trying to “catch up” by taking several drinks quickly. Fast drinking can push someone beyond their limit before they realise it.

Spending to impress

Money regrets are common after weekend outings. Some people buy drinks they cannot afford, pay for large groups to look generous or spend a huge share of their salary in one night.

If someone earns Ksh30K and spends Ksh10K on alcohol in one weekend, the pressure may appear later through rent stress, debt or skipped essentials. A better habit is setting a budget before leaving home and sticking to it. Responsible fun should not create financial problems by Monday.

Ignoring safety

Trusting strangers too quickly, leaving drinks unattended, fighting, driving after drinking or losing track of friends are mistakes that can carry serious consequences.

The CDC warns that excessive drinking is linked to injuries, violence and impaired judgment.

That is why planning transport, staying aware of surroundings and keeping trusted company matters.

Hydration also matters. Alternating with water and taking breaks can reduce dehydration and help with pacing.

Forgetting the next day

Some people drink as if Sunday and Monday do not exist. But hangovers, missed duties, damaged relationships and poor decisions often continue after the music stops.

The smartest night out is not the most expensive or loudest one. It is the one where you enjoy yourself, return safely, protect your money and wake up without regret.
