OpenAI confirms global ChatGPT outage
By William Muthama, July 25, 2026OpenAI has confirmed a worldwide outage affecting ChatGPT, with the company reporting elevated error rates across several of its services on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
According to the company’s status updates, the issue has affected ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, and Codex, leaving many users unable to log in, load chats, or access previous conversations.
The outage began earlier in the day, with OpenAI first flagging the problem as an investigation before later saying it had applied a mitigation and was monitoring recovery.
“We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” the company wrote.
That suggests engineers have identified at least part of the problem and are working to restore normal service, though the company has not yet given a full explanation of the cause or a timeline for complete recovery.

Users across multiple regions reported disruptions simultaneously, reinforcing that the problem was not limited to a single country or internet provider.
Reports pointed to failures in both the web and mobile versions of ChatGPT, with some users saying they were unable to open old chat histories or start new conversations.
For many users, the outage was especially disruptive because ChatGPT has become a daily tool for writing, research, coding, and customer support tasks.
The company’s status page also said, “We’re currently experiencing issues,” underscoring that the incident was still active while recovery efforts were underway.
OpenAI has not yet given a full explanation of the cause or a timeline for complete restoration. For now, the most important sign is that mitigation steps have been put in place and the incident is being actively monitored, but users may still experience intermittent failures until service stabilises
The outage has affected people widely because ChatGPT has become one of the most used tools for work, study, research, writing, and everyday communication, making even a brief disruption highly noticeable for users who rely on it throughout the day.
