iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18: Why Apple may separate the launches

For years, tech enthusiasts and buyers across Kenya have grown accustomed to September bringing a complete line-up of new iPhones. Whether saving for the standard version or aiming for the top-tier device, September remained the key anchor on Apple’s annual calendar.

However, supply chain reports and industry leaks indicate that Apple plans to break away from this routine for the iPhone 18 generation, according to Forbes and multiple international publications.

Instead of dropping all models simultaneously, Apple is preparing a staggered release schedule split across two distinct windows. The flagship iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable device are slated for September 2026.

Buyers waiting for the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, or the second-generation iPhone Air will have to wait until spring 2027.

iPhone 18 Pro Release Date: Apple’s History

The first iPhone was unveiled in January 2007 and went on sale in June that year. The next three iPhones, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4, were announced and released in June 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Then there was the iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011, the last unveiled while Steve Jobs was alive and the first keynote hosted by Tim Cook, who is the current Apple CEO.

This September, Apple holds a special event, leading up to the iPhone 18 Pro release date. That is as certain as it can be, because it is the routine the company has followed every single year since 2012. 

Despite the absence of the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air second-generation, the models which are announced will then follow a strict schedule: pre-orders will open on Friday, September 11, 2026, and the new phones will go on sale on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Technical upgrades and performance differences

The internal specifications highlight why Apple is giving its premium tier the spotlight first. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to debut the new A20 Pro processor built on a 2-nanometre manufacturing process, paired with 12GB of RAM and variable aperture camera lenses.

By comparison, the standard iPhone 18 will utilise the base A20 chip alongside 9 GB of RAM. Launching the Pro models first allows Apple to showcase its most advanced silicon and camera hardware without lower-cost alternatives pulling buyer interest away during the initial sales wave.

What the launch split means for Kenyan consumers

For local shoppers planning their next phone upgrade, this timeline adjustment impacts financial planning. Anyone holding out for the regular iPhone 18 in late 2026 will need to adjust their expectations for early 2027.
