How to change or delete your WhatsApp username

Once you have created a username, you are not stuck with it forever. The app allows you to change your username, delete it completely, or create a new one whenever you want.
If you are thinking about updating your profile or simply want a fresh username, here is how to do it.
How to change your WhatsApp username
Changing your username is a simple process that only takes a few taps.
Follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the area around your profile photo.
- Select your username.
- Enter your new preferred username.
- If the username is available and meets WhatsApp’s rules, save the changes.
Remember that every username must be unique. If someone else is already using the one you want, you will need to choose another option.
How to delete your WhatsApp username
If you no longer want to use a username, WhatsApp lets you remove it at any time.
To delete your username:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your profile.
- Open the username section.
- Choose the option to delete your username.
- Confirm your decision.
Once deleted, people who do not already have your phone number will no longer be able to find you using that username.
Can you get your username back?
Yes. If you delete your username, WhatsApp reserves it for you for 14 days. During that period, you can reclaim it if you change your mind. After the 14-day period ends, the username becomes available for someone else to register.
Things to know before changing your username
Before making any changes, keep these important points in mind:
- Your username is optional. You do not have to create one if you prefer using your phone number.
- People who already have your phone number saved will continue seeing your number as before.
- People who do not have your number saved will see your username instead, helping keep your phone number private.
- Some usernames are reserved for businesses, governments and public figures, so they may not be available.
- If your preferred username is unavailable, WhatsApp can suggest similar alternatives.
Can you transfer your username?
If you change your phone number on the same device, your username can move to the new number. However, WhatsApp does not currently support transferring usernames when moving your account to a different device.
