Safety measures to take as heavy rains hit Kenya
By Katemarthason Okudo, April 29, 2026Kenyans have been waking up to cold, steady rains that have slowly changed how everyday life feels across many towns and cities. From early morning commutes to evening errands, people are having to move a little slower, step carefully, and carry umbrellas almost everywhere they go as floods continue on roads and pathways.
With the weather expected to continue this way, concerns about flooding in some areas are growing, prompting a public advisory from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration urging people to stay alert and take simple precautions.
“We urge all citizens to avoid unnecessary movement in flooded areas and to remain vigilant as rains continue across different parts of the country,” the government stated.
For many Kenyans, this rainy season is not just about umbrellas and gumboots; it is about adapting daily lifestyle habits to stay safe and comfortable. From commuting to work to running errands, waterlogged roads and sudden flooding have become part of the everyday reality.
Safety tips
Residents are encouraged to make small but effective adjustments in their routines. Wearing waterproof shoes, carrying umbrellas at all times, and avoiding shortcuts through flooded alleys can make a big difference in personal safety. Drivers are also advised to slow down and avoid roads with visible water accumulation. In many cases, what looks like shallow water can hide dangerous potholes or strong currents.

Home life is also affected, with families advised to clear drainage around their compounds and ensure water flows freely to avoid flooding inside homes. Keeping emergency items such as flashlights, dry clothes, and basic food supplies has also been recommended.
“Simple preparedness at the household level can reduce risk and protect lives during heavy rains,” the ministry added.
Despite the inconvenience, experts note that rainy seasons can still be enjoyed with the right mindset. Warm drinks, cozy indoor activities, and staying informed through weather updates can help families adapt positively to the season.
