5 things to consider before dating a colleague

While workplace relationships can turn into meaningful partnerships, dating someone you work with can also come with challenges. Before taking that step, there are a few things worth thinking about.
1. Know your workplace policy
Some workplaces have rules about relationships between employees, particularly where one person supervises the other.
Before getting involved, understand your employer’s policy on workplace relationships. This can help you avoid conflicts of interest or problems with management later.
2. Think about professional boundaries
Dating a colleague does not mean your relationship should become part of your daily work.
It is important to agree on boundaries, especially during working hours. Personal disagreements should not affect meetings, assignments or how you treat each other professionally.
Keeping work and your relationship separate can also help protect your careers.
3. Consider what happens if you break up
Nobody enters a relationship expecting it to end, but it is still something worth considering.
Unlike other relationships, you may have to continue seeing your ex at meetings, in the office or during work events. Think about whether both of you could remain professional if the relationship ended.
Having a plan for maintaining respectful boundaries can make a difficult situation easier.
4. Be careful about workplace gossip
Once colleagues notice that two co-workers are spending more time together, questions and rumours can quickly follow.
You do not owe everyone an explanation about your personal life. Discuss with your partner how much, if anything, you want your colleagues to know.
Keeping some aspects of the relationship private can also reduce unnecessary workplace attention.
5. Ask whether the relationship is worth the risk
Before starting a workplace romance, consider what you could gain and what you could potentially lose.
If the relationship becomes serious, are you both comfortable dealing with the professional complications that could come with it? Are you able to communicate openly and respect each other’s boundaries?
Dating a colleague is not automatically a bad idea. Many relationships begin at work and develop into lasting partnerships. The important thing is to approach the relationship thoughtfully and avoid allowing personal feelings to interfere with professional responsibilities.
