Stop using your shirt to clean your glasses: Here is the right way

By , July 23, 2026

Keeping your eyeglasses clean can feel like an endless job. You wipe them on your shirt, and a few minutes later, you are staring through smudges again.

Getting clear vision all day does not require expensive equipment or complicated routines, but it does take the right technique to protect your lenses from scratches and build-up.

Most smudges come from natural skin oils, eyelashes, dust, and daily touching. When you use the corner of a sweater or a paper towel, you might think you are cleaning the glass, but you are actually rubbing micro-dust into the surface.

Over time, this creates fine scratches that ruin clarity and damage special lens coatings.

The easiest way to clean your glasses is with simple soap and water. Start by washing your hands thoroughly to remove dirt and oil. Rinse your glasses under lukewarm tap water to wash away surface dust.

Place a small drop of mild, lotion-free dishwashing liquid on each lens. Gently rub both sides of the lenses and all parts of the frame using your fingertips.

Rinse the glasses completely under running water to ensure no soap remains. Dry the lenses and frame carefully using a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid using paper towels, tissue paper, or clothing, as these materials contain rough fibres that easily scratch delicate coatings.

Daily care and protection

When you are away from home, carrying a small spray bottle of dedicated lens cleaner and a clean microfibre cloth is the safest option. If dust settles on your lenses during the day, blow on them lightly before wiping to dislodge loose particles.

Proper storage is just as important as proper cleaning. Always place your glasses in a hard protective case when you are not wearing them. Leaving glasses on a desk, car dashboard, or bed makes them vulnerable to dust, spills, and accidental damage.

Additionally, never lay your glasses face down on any surface. Resting the lenses directly on a table or counter guarantees scratches over time. When taking them off, place them upside down resting on the frames instead.

Heat can also ruin your lenses. Avoid leaving your eyewear inside a parked car on hot days or exposing them to high temperatures, as heat can warp the plastic frames and peel off protective lens coatings.
