Smart ways to reuse empty beauty containers at home
By Dan Kauna, September 12, 2026Empty cosmetic containers often wind up in household rubbish bins once face creams, lotions, and shampoos run out. But these plastic pots, glass dropper bottles, and wide-mouthed jars can easily find a second life around the house.
Repurposing these containers saves money while keeping plastic waste out of estates and dumpsites.
Household uses for jars and pumps
Small glass jars from face moisturisers and eye creams make neat holders for small items. After a quick wash with warm water and soap, these tubs can store buttons, safety pins, hair clips, or ear studs on a dressing table.

Wide-mouthed tubs can also hold cotton buds or paperclips, keeping drawers tidy without needing to spend money on plastic organisers.
Larger pump bottles from liquid soap or body lotion can be thoroughly rinsed and refilled with dishwashing liquid or hand sanitiser for kitchen and bathroom sinks.
Empty shampoo and shower gel bottles also adapt well to new uses. Cut off the top half of a tall plastic bottle and smooth any rough edges to create a phone holder for charging outlets or a container for pens and pencils on a study desk.
Dropper bottles from skin serums work well for storing hair oils or travel liquids, removing the need to buy single-use travel sets which are usually pricey.
Extending container life
Repurposing packaging at home directly reduces the amount of domestic waste generated. Scientific research into cosmetic packaging sustainability confirms that “dematerialisation and recycled content had the most beneficial impacts on packaging sustainability.”

Giving containers repeated use extends their lifecycle and lowers the environmental burden associated with single-use plastics.
Before repurposing any container, proper cleaning is essential. Soak jars in hot water with dish soap to help loosen remaining creams and sticky paper labels.
A tablespoon of baking soda helps remove strong scents from scented lotions. Once rinsed and dried completely, these containers offer neat, functional storage across the home without spending extra money.
