How to quickly report faulty Kenya Power equipment using USSD shortcode

By , July 20, 2026

Kenya Power has urged members of the public to report dangerous electrical hazards in their estates to prevent power blackouts and keep communities safe.

In a public safety update issued on July 20, 2026, the electricity distributor asked citizens not to ignore broken wires or burning equipment, like transformer fires on power poles.

Asking Kenyans to take action under the slogan “SPOT, STOP & ACT!”, the company noted that staying silent during an emergency only makes things worse.

The utility provider encouraged consumers to take part in keeping their surroundings safe. To make reporting simple for everyone, the lighting company highlighted its self-service shortcode.

Kenya Power advised citizens to “Dial the ultimate safety shortcut *977#” whenever they see electrical danger nearby. The USSD menu works on any mobile phone across all networks without needing internet data.

Simple steps to report electrical emergencies

When using the USSD service, customers can navigate through the menu options to select incident reporting, choose the specific problem, and enter location details.

Once the report goes through, the system creates a tracking reference number that emergency maintenance teams use to fix the problem on the ground.

“Incase upatane na such a safety incidence, report immediately kwa *977#,” the company wrote.

Reporting broken cables, leaning poles, or sparking transformers early helps reduce long power outages and prevents serious risks like property fires or electric shocks.

Sharing the word to keep neighbourhoods safe

Kenya Power encouraged people to share the reporting steps with friends and family so everyone knows what to do when trouble pops up.

The company urged consumers to “Share this with your neighbours so everyone knows the code!” to help make estates safer for all.

Apart from reporting safety risks, the *977# USSD shortcode also allows customers to manage routine electricity services on their phones.

Users can buy prepaid tokens, pay postpaid bills, check account balances, and view recent transactions at any time.

For urgent emergencies or detailed help, customers can also reach the Kenya Power national contact centre directly by calling 97771.

Reporting faulty equipment on time keeps power flowing smoothly across the country.
