A fresh-smelling fridge is not just pleasant; it’s a sign that your food is being stored safely and hygienically. Unpleasant odours often come from spoilt food, spills, or poor airflow, but the good news is that they’re easy to prevent with a few simple habits.

Here’s how to keep your fridge smelling clean and fresh all the time.

 1. Clean your fridge regularly

One of the most effective ways to prevent bad odours is by giving your fridge a regular deep clean. Aim to do this at least once a month. Remove all items, discard anything expired, and wipe down shelves and drawers with a warm water and baking soda mixture.

This helps eliminate lingering smells without leaving behind strong chemical scents.

 2. Store food properly

Improperly stored food is one of the biggest culprits behind fridge odours. Always keep leftovers in airtight containers to prevent smells from spreading. Raw foods like meat and fish should be tightly sealed and stored on the bottom shelf to avoid leaks.

Fruits and vegetables should be kept in designated drawers to maintain freshness and reduce odour transfer.

 3. Don’t let food sit too long

It’s easy to forget about leftovers tucked away at the back of the fridge. Make it a habit to check your fridge every few days and throw out anything that’s gone bad. Labelling leftovers with dates can help you keep track of how long they’ve been stored.

 4. Use natural deodorisers

Natural odour absorbers can help keep your fridge smelling fresh. Place an open box of baking soda inside to neutralise odours. You can also use activated charcoal, coffee grounds, or even a slice of lemon to absorb unpleasant smells and leave a light, fresh scent.

 5. Wipe spills immediately

Spills from sauces, juices, or dairy products can quickly lead to strong odours if left unattended. Clean up any spills as soon as they happen to prevent bacteria build-up and lingering smells.

 6. Keep air circulating

Avoid overpacking your fridge. When there’s too much inside, air can’t circulate properly, which can lead to uneven cooling and trapped odours. Keep items organised and allow space between them for proper airflow.

7. Maintain the right temperature

Keeping your fridge at the correct temperature (around 3–5°C) slows down bacterial growth and helps food stay fresh longer. This reduces the chances of unpleasant smells developing.

 8. Add a fresh scent boost

For an extra touch, place a small bowl of lemon slices or vanilla extract inside your fridge. These natural scents can help keep things smelling clean and inviting without overpowering your food.
