Tips for keeping cockroaches out of the kitchen for good
By Dan Kauna, September 28, 2026Cockroaches are resilient pests, but keeping them out of a kitchen can be achieved via simple, consistent habits rather than heavy chemical sprays.
While many households wait until they notice an infestation, preventing their arrival requires removing the water, food, and shelter that attract them in the first place.
Block entry paths and starve food sources
Prevention starts by physically shutting roaches out. Cockroaches can squeeze through gaps as thin as a coin, making kitchen cabinets, sink pipe outlets, and skirting boards primary access routes.
Sealing these crevices with silicone caulk or cement putty cuts off their movement between rooms and wall voids. Paying close attention to gaps around drainage pipes under the sink is particularly effective, as these damp areas provide both entry and water.

Eliminating food sources is the second critical step. Unsealed bags of flour, sugar, or maize meal act as open invitations. Storing all foodstuff in airtight glass or thick plastic containers keeps pests out and preserves fresh ingredients.
Daily habits like wiping down kitchen countertops, cleaning grease splatters behind cookers, and sweeping floor crumbs before sleeping remove overnight feeding opportunities.
Managing water is equally important; repairing leaking taps, drying sink basins, and emptying pet water bowls overnight deprives roaches of the moisture they need to survive.
Use natural deterrents and keep surfaces clean
Beyond sealing gaps and storing food properly, natural remedies can help keep kitchen surfaces free from pests. Essential oils such as peppermint, clove, and tea tree oil contain natural compounds that irritate a cockroach’s sensory system and disrupt its scent trails.
Mixing a few drops of clove or peppermint oil with water and spraying it along skirting boards, dark cabinet corners, and window frames creates an effective repellent barrier.

Scientific research supports using plant-based solutions alongside sanitation. A study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences concluded that “essential oil-based repellents can serve as an effective and environment friendly solution for cockroach control.”
Combining sealed entry points, clean food storage, and plant-based sprays creates a kitchen environment where cockroaches cannot settle or breed.
Taking these preventive steps consistently ensures long-term results without relying on harsh household chemicals.
