Outfits every man should wear on a first date
By Paulette Mboga, July 3, 2026First impressions matter, and what you wear on a first date can say a lot before you even start talking.
You do not need expensive designer clothes to look good. The key is wearing clean, well-fitting outfits that match the occasion and make you feel confident. Whether you are meeting for coffee, dinner, or a casual walk, dressing appropriately shows that you put thought into the date.
The smart casual look
A smart casual outfit is one of the safest choices for a first date. Pair a well-fitted button-down shirt with dark jeans or chinos. Finish the look with clean white sneakers or loafers.
Choose solid colours such as white, light blue, navy, or olive green. These shades are easy to match and give a polished appearance without looking too formal. Roll up your sleeves if the setting is relaxed for a laid-back but stylish finish.
A polo shirt and chinos
If the date is during the day or in warm weather, a quality polo shirt is an excellent option. Pair it with slim-fit chinos in beige, navy, or black.
Complete the outfit with clean sneakers or casual leather shoes. Avoid oversized polo shirts or ones with large logos. A simple, well-fitted polo creates a neat and effortless look.
The classic T-shirt and jeans
For a casual date at a café, the movies, or a park, a plain crew-neck T-shirt paired with dark jeans works perfectly. Choose a T-shirt in black, white, grey, or navy.
Layer it with a lightweight jacket if the weather is cool. The focus should be on fit rather than brand names. Clean, wrinkle-free clothes always leave a better impression than expensive outfits that look untidy.
A lightweight blazer
If you are going to a nice restaurant or an evening event, add a lightweight blazer to your outfit. Wear it over a plain T-shirt or button-down shirt with dark trousers or chinos.
This combination looks stylish without feeling too formal. You can skip the tie unless the occasion calls for it.
Pay attention to your shoes
Even the best outfit can be spoiled by dirty shoes. Clean white sneakers, loafers, Chelsea boots, or polished leather shoes are all great choices depending on the setting.
Match your shoes with the rest of your outfit. If you are wearing a belt, choose one that complements your footwear for a more coordinated appearance.
Keep accessories simple
A classic watch, a neat belt, and subtle sunglasses for daytime dates are enough. Avoid wearing too many chains, bracelets, or flashy accessories that take attention away from your overall look.
If you wear jewellery, keep it minimal and tasteful.
Your outfit is only part of the picture. Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. Get a fresh haircut if needed, trim your beard, clean your nails, and use deodorant. A light spray of cologne is enough; avoid using too much.
Most importantly, wear clothes that fit properly and suit your personality. Confidence comes from feeling comfortable in what you are wearing. When you combine good grooming with a simple, well-chosen outfit, you are more likely to make a positive first impression and enjoy the date without worrying about your appearance.
