Modern or modest? How Gen Z is challenging traditional dress codes

From mini skirts and crop tops to oversized shirts, sheer fabrics and modest maxi dresses, young people are increasingly choosing outfits based on personal style rather than old-fashioned expectations.
Fashion is becoming personal
For many Gen Z fashion followers, dressing well is less about following strict rules and more about expressing personality. An outfit can be bold, revealing, covered-up or a combination of different styles, depending on the occasion and the individual.
Social media has also made it easier for young people to discover fashion trends from different parts of the world. TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest have exposed users to everything from streetwear and Y2K-inspired outfits to minimalist and modest fashion.
This has created a generation that is more willing to experiment instead of sticking to one definition of what looks appropriate.
Is revealing always inappropriate?
Short skirts, low-cut tops and sheer outfits often attract criticism, particularly when they are worn in settings where older generations expect more conservative dressing. However, Gen Z has increasingly challenged the idea that showing skin automatically means someone is poorly dressed.
For some, revealing fashion has become a form of confidence and self-expression rather than an invitation for judgment. Others still prefer covered outfits and believe modest dressing can be equally fashionable.
The disagreement has therefore shifted from simply asking what someone is wearing to questioning who gets to decide what is considered appropriate.
Modesty is changing too
Choosing modest clothing does not necessarily mean rejecting modern fashion. Gen Z has also embraced long skirts, oversized clothing, layering, loose trousers and covered silhouettes while styling them in contemporary ways.
The result is a fashion landscape where modest and revealing styles can exist side by side.
Ultimately, the debate over modern or modest dressing has highlighted a wider generational shift. Gen Z is increasingly treating fashion as a personal choice, while traditional expectations about how people should dress continue to influence conversations around appearance and respectability.
