Gen Z fashion rules millennials still don’t understand

Instead of following old style rules, many young people today focus on comfort, self-expression and confidence. They are less interested in dressing to impress others and more interested in wearing what feels right to them.
While some millennials have embraced these trends, others still find them confusing. Here are four Gen Z fashion rules that many millennials still struggle to understand.
1. Oversized is better than fitted
For many millennials, wearing clothes that fit closely to the body was once considered the best way to look neat and stylish. Gen Z has taken a different approach. Oversized T-shirts, hoodies, jeans and jackets have become everyday fashion staples.
To Gen Z, oversized clothing is comfortable, relaxed and fashionable. The look is not about wearing clothes that are too big by mistake. Instead, it is about choosing pieces that create a casual style while still looking put together. Many pair loose tops with baggy trousers or wide-leg jeans, creating outfits that focus on comfort without sacrificing style.
2. Mixing expensive and affordable fashion
Gen Z does not believe that looking fashionable requires wearing expensive designer brands from head to toe. It is common to see someone wearing a second-hand jacket, affordable jeans and premium sneakers all in one outfit.
This generation enjoys mixing high-end pieces with budget-friendly finds. Many also shop at thrift stores because they can find unique clothing that stands out. Rather than chasing luxury labels, they care more about how an outfit looks as a whole and whether it reflects their personality.
3. Vintage is always in style
Many fashion trends that millennials left behind have returned because of Gen Z. Clothing inspired by the late 1990s and early 2000s, often called Y2K fashion, has become popular once again. Baggy jeans, cargo pants, small sunglasses and denim outfits have all made a comeback.
Gen Z enjoys giving older fashion trends a modern twist instead of copying them exactly. They combine vintage items with newer pieces to create original looks. For them, wearing older styles is not about looking outdated but about bringing something unique into today’s fashion scene.
4. Personal style matters more than fashion rules
Perhaps the biggest difference is that Gen Z does not believe there is only one correct way to dress. They freely mix colours, patterns and different clothing styles without worrying too much about traditional fashion advice.
Instead of following strict rules about matching outfits, they focus on wearing clothes that express who they are. Confidence has become one of the most important parts of their fashion choices. If they like an outfit, they wear it regardless of whether it follows old style guidelines. This freedom has encouraged many young people to experiment with fashion and develop styles that feel authentic to them.
Fashion continues to evolve, and every generation leaves its mark. While millennials and Gen Z may not always agree on what looks stylish, both generations have shaped today’s fashion world in different ways.
