5 unwritten gymn rules every Kenyan should know

The gym is one of the few places where people from different backgrounds meet with a common goal: self-improvement.

Some are trying to lose weight. Others want to build muscle. Some are training for sports while others are simply fighting lifestyle diseases.

While most gyms display written rules on the walls, there are unwritten rules that make the environment respectful, safe and comfortable for everyone.

Here are 5 important ones every Kenyan should know.

1. Do not sexualise yourself or others

The gym is not a club or a dating zone. Wear decent and comfortable workout clothes that allow you to move freely without exposing the shape of your private parts.

Ladies should avoid outfits that overly expose sensitive areas, such as camel toe. Men should also avoid extremely tight clothing that draws unnecessary attention to their private areas.

Beyond dressing, avoid staring at other people’s bodies or making comments about their appearance. Everyone is there to improve themselves, not to feel watched or judged.

2. Avoid being too friendly with strangers

It is fine to greet someone or politely ask to share equipment. However, many people enter the gym with a clear mission and limited time.

Long conversations, personal questions, or unnecessary jokes can interrupt someone’s focus.

Also, remember that you do not know everyone’s intentions. While most gym goers are genuine, it is wise to maintain polite boundaries.

Keep interactions respectful and brief unless the other person clearly welcomes a longer conversation.

3. Do not bang weights unnecessarily

Controlling your weights is part of proper training. Dropping or banging them loudly after every set creates unnecessary noise and can damage equipment and flooring.

Imagine if every person in the gym decided to drop the weights at the same time. The noise and impact would make the space uncomfortable and even unsafe.

Only drop weights when it is absolutely necessary for safety, not for show.

4. Avoid vulgar language

Heavy lifts can be intense, but shouting vulgar words such as the F word can make the environment uncomfortable for others.

Gyms are shared spaces. There may be women, older people or teenagers working out around you.

Discipline in language shows maturity and respect for everyone in the room.

5. Clean equipment after use

Sweat is normal during exercise, but leaving it on benches and machines is not acceptable. Always carry a small towel and wipe down any equipment you use.

Basic hygiene protects others and creates a pleasant training environment. No one wants to lie on a sweaty bench.

In the end, gym culture is built on mutual respect. When everyone follows these simple unwritten rules, the gym becomes a positive space where people can focus, grow, and achieve their goals without discomfort.
