How to play darts: Rules, scoring, and tips for beginners
By William Muthama, December 20, 2025Darts is a little-known but rapidly growing game in Kenya, gaining attention thanks to David Munyua’s impressive performances on the global stage.
It’s a fun and social game that can be played with friends and family or enjoyed competitively.
At its core, darts involves throwing small, pointed missiles at a circular board divided into numbered sections, aiming to score points with accuracy and strategy. While it may look tricky at first, the basic principles are easy to learn.
Equipment needed
To get started, all you need is a dartboard and a set of darts. Boards are typically hung on a wall at eye level, about 1.73 metres from the floor.
Players stand behind a marked line, known as the oche, approximately 2.37 metres away. Beginners can use soft-tip darts for safety and ease, while steel-tip darts are preferred for serious play.
Objective of the game
The most common format is 501, where each player begins with 501 points and aims to reach exactly zero.
Players take turns throwing three darts per round, subtracting the total points scored from their starting number.

The final dart must land in a “double” section of the outer ring of the board to win. Other formats, like 301, work similarly but with lower starting points.
Scoring basics
Each numbered segment has three scoring zones:
- Single: the normal score of the segment
- Double: outer ring, doubles the segment score
- Triple: inner ring, triples the segment score
The bullseye has two zones: 25 points for the outer circle and 50 for the inner circle. Beginners should focus on landing darts in higher-value single segments before attempting doubles or triples.
Technique and stance
Stand with your dominant foot forward and your body facing the board. Hold the dart lightly but firmly, aim carefully, and follow through in a smooth motion. Consistent practice helps develop muscle memory and improves accuracy.

Planning your throws is as important as precision. Start with easy numbers to build confidence and gradually aim for doubles or triples as your skills improve.
Playing with friends or family can make practice more enjoyable while helping you understand scoring and strategy in a relaxed environment.
Darts may seem challenging at first, but with patience, practice, and a focus on fundamentals, beginners can quickly enjoy both the fun and competitive sides of the game.
