5 ways to make a delicious pizza at home

By , December 6, 2025

Pizza – cheesy, delicious, and often expensive when ordered from restaurants. This festive season, you can create your own at home, saving money and turning it into a fun activity for family and friends.

With the right approach, anyone can make a perfectly round, golden, and well-baked pizza.

Making the dough

The foundation of any pizza is its dough. In a large bowl, mix 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour with a teaspoon of salt and sugar.

Dissolve a packet of dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons) in 1 cup of warm water and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

Slowly combine the yeast mixture with the flour and add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Cover it with a damp cloth and leave it to rise for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.

Shaping the pizza

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it on a floured surface. Rotate the dough as you roll to form a circular shape and gently stretch it with your hands.

Aim for about ½ inch thickness. Place it on a greased tray or preheated baking tray, and press lightly to form a small edge for the crust. This ensures a classic pizza look.

Preparing the sauce

For the sauce, blend a can of peeled tomatoes with 2 cloves of garlic, salt, and pepper. Simmer gently for 5–7 minutes, adding dried oregano and basil for that familiar aroma.

Allow the sauce to cool slightly before spreading it evenly over the dough, leaving the crust untouched.

Adding toppings

Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously, then add your preferred toppings such as chicken, sausage, peppers, onions, or pineapple.

You can get creative with the toppings depending on what you have at home.

Baking and Checking

Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F). Bake for 12–15 minutes. The pizza is ready when the crust turns golden brown, the cheese bubbles, and the edges feel firm but springy.

Lift a corner gently to check the bottom; it should be lightly golden, not doughy. For extra flavour, brush the crust lightly with cooking oil.

Let the pizza rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot and enjoy a homemade meal that is not only fun to make but also allows you to control the toppings, taste, and quality.

Homemade pizza is a simple, creative way to celebrate with family this festive season, and the ingredients are easy to find locally at your nearest supermarket.
