Mama Chosee: African mother content creator making viral skits that captivate Gen Z

Mary Nyonje, popularly known as Mama Chosee, has emerged as one of Kenya’s most engaging content creators, winning hearts across TikTok and other social media platforms.
Hailing from Bungoma County, she has captured audiences with her relatable and humorous portrayal of the classic African mother persona, appealing especially to Gen Z.
In most of her skits, Mama Chosee acts alongside fellow creator Edwin Juma Wanyama, popularly known by his stage name Iam Chosee, often portraying mother-and-son scenarios in a village setting.
From playful scoldings to dramatic reactions over everyday situations, her content captures the essence of a typical African mother, firm, loving, and full of life.

Relatable skits
Her performances are so relatable that many viewers feel like they are watching their own mothers, which has helped her skits go viral repeatedly.
Most of Mama Chosee’s videos are trending on TikTok, where short, funny, and relatable clips thrive. Her ability to mix humour with traditional African parenting quirks has made her skits shareable, sparking conversations among young audiences who both laugh and relate.
Acting and family support
Mama Chosee, in a past interview with Oga Obinna, revealed that her flair for performance started at an early age, when she used to participate in school dramas.
“Nilianza kuact kama niko kwa shule standard four nilikuwa nacheza drama,” she revealed.
She was later introduced to the digital space in February 2025 by Iam Chosee, who happens to be her nephew.

“Tulianza kuact na yeye February this year (2025),” Iam Chosee said during the same interview.
In addition, she says her husband and children are supportive of her work, encouraging her creativity. This family backing gives her an authentic touch, allowing her to portray the African mother character without seeming forced.
“Watoto wangu wananisupport na wanafurahia sana wanasema ingawaje umeanza kwa uzee lakini mungu ataweka mkono, ata mzee ananisupport sana,” she said.

Capturing Gen Z’s attention
Despite her older age, Mama Chosee competes with younger content creators, showing that age is no barrier when content is relatable and entertaining. Gen Z, known for loving authentic and humorous content, has embraced her skits, making her one of the trending creators in Kenya.
Her growing popularity not only bridges generational gaps but also highlights a trend that audiences are increasingly drawn to content that balances nostalgia, humour, and cultural familiarity.
Mama Chosee is more than just a content creator, she is a cultural icon for anyone who has grown up around strict yet loving African mothers. With viral skits that appeal to both young and older audiences, Mama Chosee is proving that the African mother persona is evergreen, and the younger generation cannot get enough of it.
