According to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi remain the country’s top institutions, both earning positions in the 501+ band globally, an impressive feat for African universities.
Comparatively, Kenyatta University beat UoN in good health and well-being, quality of learning experience, financial stability and quality of research.

Kenyatta University has established itself as one of the most reputable public universities in Kenya. It is ranked in the 501+ category globally, sharing the same tier with some of Africa’s best universities.
The university scores strongly in teaching (10.3–27.2) and research influence (54.6), showing its commitment to academic excellence. With a sprawling main campus in Nairobi and several satellite campuses nationwide, Kenyatta University offers a wide range of programs in sciences, humanities, health, and technology. University of Nairobi
Closely following is the University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya’s oldest and most globally recognised university. Also ranked in the 501+ global category, UoN scores notably in teaching (10.3–27.2), research (15.9), and citations (49.4).
