Yvonne Kanyi admits she felt disappointed after learning she was expecting a baby boy

Content creator Yvonne Kanyi has admitted that she felt disappointed after learning she was expecting a baby boy, saying she had strongly hoped for a girl.
She explained that her expectations had been shaped by her own experiences growing up and the bond she shares with her mother. She said she had imagined having a daughter and building a similar connection over time.
“So they told me it’s a boy. I was disappointed, because I wanted a girl. I really wanted a girl,” Yvonne Kanyi said in a podcast on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
She said she had always believed that the relationship between a mother and daughter grows stronger with time. She explained that this is something she deeply valued and had hoped to experience herself.

“I think as you become more of a woman, you really bond with your mom as you grow older. And I really wanted that,” she said.
She added that she had a certain view about raising a girl, describing girls as loving and easy to connect with. She said this influenced how she reacted when she first heard the news.
“Girls are just sweethearts. So when I found out it was a boy, I was like ahh…” Yvonne Kanyi said.
Coming to terms with baby boy news
She explained that the news also came with a sense of surprise within her family, as there had been different expectations about the baby’s gender. She said there had been ongoing guesses before the reveal.
“Then, other people in my family and I were guessing. My partner said it was going to be a boy,” she said.

She added that she also felt disappointed after losing that prediction to her partner. She explained that the moment brought mixed emotions as she tried to accept the outcome.
She said the experience later became more real as she started preparing for the baby. She explained that shopping for baby items helped her adjust to the idea of having a son.
“It was interesting, buying boy stuff, now I am going to be a mom boy,” she said.
She also shared that she had concerns about the future, especially around parenting alone. She said this thought caused her some anxiety at the time.
“There was a bit of anxiety about becoming a single parent. I was like if this doesn’t work, I was going to be a single mom to a boy, I was just worried,” Yvonne Kanyi said.
