What if I died! Salasya recounts emotional mid-air moment over ocean

By , March 20, 2026

Mumia East MP Peter Salasya has shared a personal and emotional experience he had while travelling abroad last year, revealing a side of leadership rarely seen in public.

In a statement on his Instagram account on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Salasya recounted being thousands of feet above the ocean, en route from Casablanca, Morocco, when a sudden, chilling thought struck him.

“Somewhere in the middle of the vast ocean, surrounded by nothing but endless water and silence, a thought suddenly crossed my mind… What if this plane went down right here?” he wrote.

The fear quickly gave way to a surge of love and responsibility. Salasya said he began thinking about his people, and in particular, the women of Mumias East.

“And then it hit me harder… What would happen to my people? My strong, supportive women of Mumias East… who would stand for them? Who would walk with them? Who would fight for them?”

The emotions overwhelmed him. “At that moment, I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Tears just started flowing down my cheeks… quietly, uncontrollably,” he admitted.

The cabin crew noticed and approached him, concerned. But what followed surprised him.

“When I finally shared what was on my heart, something unexpected happened… people started smiling, even laughing softly, not to mock me, but because they understood. They saw the love. They felt it.”

For Salasya, the moment went beyond fear and tears. It became a realisation about the essence of his connection with his community.

“In that moment, I realised something deeper than words… This is not just leadership. This is not just representation. This is LOVE. Mumias East, you are not just my constituents… You are my family. And my heart beats for you every single day,” he concluded.
