VDJ Jones: Many Kenyan artistes are still struggling financially

DJ and music producer VDJ Jones has highlighted the financial challenges faced by many local artistes despite their online popularity and growing social media followings.

Speaking in an Instagram video on Thursday, March 19, 2026, he noted that visibility and viral fame do not always translate into a steady or reliable income, leaving many performers struggling to cover basic living expenses.

Many Kenyan artists are still struggling financially, hawataki kutafuta side hustles na kujituma juu wanaogopa kukua judged,” he noted.

He pointed out that one of the main reasons artistes face financial strain is hesitation to explore side hustles. Jones highlighted that many artistes fear being judged by peers or fans if they take on additional jobs or business ventures outside of music.

According to Jones, this reluctance often limits their financial stability, even when their music is performing well online.

The DJ explained that by diversifying income streams through collaborations, small businesses, or other ventures, artists can better support themselves while continuing to grow their creative careers.

“Artistes worry about being seen doing something ordinary, like driving for Uber or running a small business,” he said. He continued, “I can’t go to Uber, people will judge me… But at the end of the day, you have to eat. An artist has to eat. It’s very important.”

The struggle, according to Jones, is widespread across Kenya’s music scene. While many artistes have large social media followings, this does not always translate into sufficient income to cover daily expenses or invest in their careers. As a DJ and producer, Jones has witnessed how talent and popularity alone often fall short of supporting long-term growth.

He urged artistes to take a flexible approach to their careers, combining artistry with practical income opportunities. Jones said that by balancing creative work with side hustles, performers can ensure they meet their basic needs without compromising their music.
