‘Siwezi rudi block’ – Mejja addresses his fears as he revisits humble background

Legendary musician Major Nameye Khadija, popularly known as Mejja, has opened up on his fears and what motivates him to keep pushing on while reflecting on his journey in music.
In an interview during his recent album listening party, the award-winning singer candidly addressed his past and how his humble beginnings have shaped his path.

Mejja admitted that his greatest motivation is the fear of going back to his previous life, which was characterized by challenges and financial difficulty, which he struggled with and overcame.
“Ukiuliza tu mtu ametoka ghetto ama mtu ametoka one step to the next, anakuwanga na hiyo uoga ya kurudi mahali alitoka. Hako kauoga hukupea motivation, mtu yeyote ametoka kwa streets anaelewa kile nasema,” Mejja explained.
This loosely translates to: ‘If you ask anyone who came from the ghetto or who has made a step forward, no one wants to go back to the former state. That fear in itself is motivation, and anyone who was once in the streets understands what I am talking about.”
Giving up
He also attributed his success to resilience, saying that many who started the journey of music with him dropped along the way to acquire jobs.
Mejja advised people to be patient, insisting that progress, however slow, brings one closer to their desired destination.
“Nilianza career na watu wengi sana waligive up wakaaanza majob, and then they were not happy in their jobs. Yaani, hawakuelewa hii kitu; slow motion is better than no motion. Kuwa tu patient, utafika mahali unaenda. (I started my career with many people who later gave up and took up employment, but they are not happy in their jobs. They did not understand this thing; slow motion is better than none, and patience brings one closer to the destination,” he explained.
Mejja: I don’t want sympathy
The singer explained that, having hustled his way to where he is, hard work is not an option, especially given that he has nothing.

He made it clear that he does not want sympathy as he shared that his mum came from a children’s home and he does not have an aunt.
“Mamangu ametoka children’s home, so I don’t have an aunt. I don’t have anything, but I don’t want your sympathies,” Mejja said.
