Shakira says Gerard Piqué breakup was darkest moment of her life

Singer Shakira has opened up about the emotional pain she experienced following her 2022 breakup with former football star Gerard Piqué, describing the separation as the “darkest moment” of her life.

According to a report by E! News on Sunday, May 24, 2026, the singer reflected on the end of her 11-year relationship with Piqué, with whom she shares two sons, Milan and Sasha.

Shakira said the breakup deeply affected her because it also marked the collapse of the family life she had hoped would last forever.

“I saw the dissolution of my family, the family that I had dreamt to keep forever,” she said.

Pain and healing

The singer explained that the difficult period also coincided with personal family challenges, including caring for her father after he suffered a severe fall shortly after the separation.

Despite the emotional struggles, Shakira said the experience ultimately changed her perspective on life and resilience.

“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps wiser or stronger,” she said, adding that difficult moments can reveal how resilient people truly are.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer also spoke about learning through suffering and appreciating the support she received from close friends during that period.

Friends and support

Among those who supported her were Chris Martin and Adele. According to Shakira, Martin once sent her an image of a broken vase repaired with gold in reference to the Japanese art of kintsugi, symbolising healing through damage.

She said the message reminded her that painful experiences can eventually make people stronger.

Shakira also reflected on how the breakup reshaped her priorities. The singer said her children and career are now her main focus, adding that she is currently not interested in dating.

Life after breakup

“No romance for me for now,” she said. “My kids are my priority and my career.”

Even after the breakup, Shakira said she still holds gratitude toward Piqué for being the father of her children.

“I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids,” she said.

Shakira and Piqué first met during the 2010 FIFA World Cup period and became one of entertainment and football’s most talked-about couples before announcing their separation in 2022.
