Pastor Charles Wachira of JCM USA resigns after Kiengei agrees to host Ruto

Pastor Charles Wachira of Jesus Christ Compassion Ministry (JCM) USA has resigned from his position, citing concerns over recent leadership decisions following confirmation that Bishop Ben Kiengei would host William Ruto at the church.

In an official statement released on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Wachira pointed to what he described as serious concerns regarding leadership principles and public engagements that have unsettled many believers, particularly young people.

He indicated that the decision was influenced by growing unease among Gen Z congregants, whom he said are increasingly calling for justice, accountability and moral clarity during what he termed a sensitive period in Kenya’s national discourse.

“OFFICIAL STATEMENT. PASTOR CHARLES WACHIRA RESIGNS FROM JCM UNITED STATES Citing serious concerns regarding leadership principles and recent public engagements that have deeply disturbed many believers – especially Gen Z, who are crying out for justice, accountability, and moral clarity during this sensitive national season in Kenya,” the statement read in part.

Wachira emphasised that the church must remain responsive to the pain and concerns of the people, warning that it should never appear indifferent in moments of national significance.

He referenced biblical teachings to underscore the responsibility of spiritual leaders to uphold truth, defend righteousness and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

“THE CHURCH MUST NEVER APPEAR INDIFFERENT TO THE PAIN OF THE PEOPLE. ‘Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.'” – Isaiah 5:20 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” – Proverbs 3:8, he wrote.

According to him, leadership actions that create confusion, division or moral discomfort among believers necessitate a principled response.

“Pastor Charles Wachira believes spiritual leadership must stand firmly on truth, righteousness, and the defence of innocent life. When leadership actions create confusion, division, or moral discomfort among believers, it becomes necessary to take a principled stand,” he added.

He maintained that his resignation was guided by conviction and conscience rather than rebellion, framing the move as a stand for integrity in spiritual leadership.

Wachira added that further communication would follow, signalling that his resignation may be part of a broader position on the unfolding developments within the church and the country.

“THIS STEP REFLECTS CONVICTION – NOT REBELLION. CONSCIENCE – NOT COMPROMISE. More communication to follow,” he wrote.

His exit comes amid heightened public debate following Kiengei’s move to host President Ruto for a special service at JCM as part of the church’s third anniversary celebrations.

The visit has sparked mixed reactions, with some, including digital content creator MC Chris Kirubi, urging the church leadership to use the opportunity to address issues affecting Gen Z, including those who lost their lives during recent protests.

“Letter to Bishop Ben Guka wa Nairobi Muthee Kiengei: when his excellency comes to church tomorrow, do not forget to remind him about the Gen Z who died, who stood up, and the others who helped one another afterwards,” MC Chris wrote on Facebook on February 21, 2026.
