Okello Max shares struggles of living as a celebrity

Kenyan singer Okello Max has opened up about the disadvantages that come with fame, saying public recognition often leads to stereotypes, financial assumptions, and pressure from family and society.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, May 12, 2026, Okello Max pointed out that one of the biggest challenges is how people assume visibility automatically means wealth.

“Stereotype. There are people who say, if you look like you know a lot of people, then you have money,” he said.

He explained that public perception often creates the impression that artists are financially stable at all times, even when that is not the case.

Money assumptions

The Taya hitmaker added that many people fail to understand the reality of income in the creative industry.

“Right now, you’re at home, you don’t even have a penny,” he said, pointing out how fame does not always reflect financial stability.

He noted that appearances often mislead the public into thinking celebrities are living comfortably without struggle.

Okello Max also highlighted pressure from relatives, commonly referred to as “black tax,” where family members expect financial support from public figures.

“Imagine relatives, black tax. They say, we see you on TV, how much money do you have?” he said.

He explained that such expectations can be overwhelming, especially when people assume success based on media visibility.

Public expectations

The singer further noted that fame comes with constant judgment and expectations that can affect how celebrities are perceived and treated.

“To him who much is given… much is expected,” he said.

He added that public figures are often judged more harshly because of their visibility, regardless of their personal realities.

Okello Max rose through the industry after working closely with top acts in the Kenyan music scene before establishing himself as a solo performer with songs such as Taya, Nyamama and Chop Life.
