The Julia Set review: A young maths genius faces love, pressure and self-doubt

Julia is the kind of student who can look at a difficult maths problem and find the answer quickly. However, her biggest struggle is not mathematics. She is uncomfortable with attention and often hides just how talented she is.
Her life changes when Pascal, a teaching assistant at her university, notices her ability and invites her to join an elite study group preparing for the Putnam Exam, one of the most difficult mathematics competitions in North America.
What begins as an opportunity for Julia to develop her talent soon becomes complicated when her relationship with Pascal grows closer.
Julia finds herself in a competitive world
Julia studies at a fictional university and has chosen to remain close to her family instead of attending some of the other universities that had offered her opportunities.
She is particularly close to her older brother, who has Down Syndrome, and her family remains an important part of the choices she makes.
At university, however, Julia quickly stands out. Pascal notices that she can solve problems that challenge other students, but instead of simply celebrating her ability, the situation becomes more complicated.
The study group is led by an accomplished mathematics professor who pushes the students as they prepare for the Putnam Exam. For Julia, the competition could open doors to further education and help her move towards the future she wants.
Julia and Pascal’s relationship changes everything
Pascal initially appears to understand Julia because they share an interest in mathematics. He is also dealing with pressure from his father, Aleksander, a famous mathematician whose achievements have created high expectations for his son.
As Julia and Pascal become romantically involved, however, the relationship begins to affect her confidence.
Julia is naturally better at mathematics than Pascal, but she does not seem interested in competing with him. At one point, she even allows Pascal to take credit for an answer she has already worked out.
This becomes an important part of the story because Julia has become used to hiding her abilities. She would rather stay in the background than make someone else feel uncomfortable.
As Pascal becomes more aware of the difference between their abilities, his behaviour towards Julia changes. His jealousy and insecurity begin to affect their relationship and her studies.
A story about learning to value yourself
Although mathematics is at the centre of The Julia Set, the film is not really about solving complicated equations. It is about Julia learning to recognise her own worth.
Her friendship with Erin, her roommate, also gives the story another side. Erin is one of the people who is willing to challenge Julia and remind her that being talented does not mean she should hide herself.
The film also draws a connection between Julia’s situation and Pascal’s family. Pascal’s father has achieved great success in mathematics, while his mother, Anne, has her own history in the field. Their family relationship gives Julia another example of what can happen when one person’s ambition dominates another person’s life.
The film’s strengths and weaknesses
One of the strongest parts of The Julia Set is Julia herself. The character is quiet, but her silence says a lot about how she sees herself and the world around her.
The mathematics also gives the film a different setting from the usual university drama. Rather than making Julia’s intelligence the only thing that defines her, the story uses it to explore pressure, relationships and identity.
