S.W.A.T. Exiles review: Hondo returns to lead a team of unlikely recruits

S.W.A.T. Exiles is a 2026 crime, action, and drama series that follows Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson as he returns to the Los Angeles Police Department’s S.W.A.T. unit after being forced into retirement.

The series begins after a fatal shooting during a high-profile mission leaves Hondo’s career in danger. Two years later, he is given one chance to return to the job, but under difficult conditions. He must build a new S.W.A.T. team using officers who have been overlooked by the department.

The new team is soon given the nickname the Exiles. Unlike the experienced officers Hondo previously worked with, this group is made up of young recruits with different skills, personalities, and problems.

Hondo gets one last chance

Hondo does not return to S.W.A.T. under normal circumstances. After the fatal shooting, he is left with the feeling that his career has been taken away from him. His return is therefore not only about stopping criminals. He also has something to prove.

His biggest task is turning a group of people who barely know each other into a team that can work together when lives are at risk. That becomes difficult because the recruits do not always agree with Hondo’s methods.

Meet the new team

Among the recruits is Sammy Bishop, a confident young officer who is comfortable with technology and live-streaming. Her approach to policing is different from Hondo’s, creating a gap between the older officer and the younger generation.

Malik Henderson is another member of the team. He is determined to prove himself and quickly discovers that working in S.W.A.T. is different from simply having the skills needed to join.

Cassidy Han is disciplined and serious about her work, but she also carries something from her past that affects how she approaches the team.

The group also includes Ethan Cole, a technology expert who is not always comfortable in social situations, and Jude Callen, whose real intentions become harder to understand as the story develops.

The first mission tests the team

The new unit does not get much time to settle.

Their first major operation forces them to work together under pressure. The team begins to understand that individual talent is not enough when dealing with dangerous situations.

Hondo watches closely, trying to identify which recruits can remain calm, follow instructions, and protect their colleagues. The early missions also show that the team members have very different ideas about how police work should be handled.

A problem inside the department

The danger eventually moves beyond the streets of Los Angeles.

Hondo begins to suspect that someone inside the S.W.A.T. unit is working against the team. This leads him towards a much larger problem involving senior figures within the LAPD and the mayor’s office.

The discovery changes the team’s mission. Hondo is no longer only trying to train inexperienced officers. He has to find out who he can trust while protecting the S.W.A.T. programme from people who appear determined to see it fail.

This gives the series another layer because the Exiles cannot simply assume that every threat is coming from outside.

A different generation of S.W.A.T. officers

One of the main ideas in S.W.A.T. Exiles is the difference between Hondo’s generation and the younger officers he has been asked to lead.

Hondo relies on experience, discipline, and teamwork, while some of the recruits are more comfortable with technology and different ways of communicating.

The clash creates some of the show’s lighter moments, but it also causes real problems when the team is under pressure. The series uses these differences to show how Hondo slowly learns that leading this group requires more than giving orders.
