LEGO ONE PIECE review: A playful take on the Straw Hat crew’s pirate adventures

Unlike a completely new story, LEGO ONE PIECE revisits events from the first two seasons of the live-action ONE PIECE. This makes it easier for viewers who may have missed the earlier series to understand how the Straw Hat crew came together and why their journey matters.
What is LEGO ONE PIECE about?
At the centre of the story is Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate whose biggest dream is to find the legendary One Piece treasure and become the Pirate King.
Luffy does not travel alone. He builds a crew made up of characters with different personalities and skills. Roronoa Zoro is the skilled swordsman, Nami is the navigator, Usopp is known for his stories and clever ideas, while Sanji is the cook who can also hold his own in a fight.
The crew travels across the seas looking for adventure while facing pirates, enemies and dangerous situations. Their journey begins in the East Blue before moving towards the Grand Line, a dangerous part of the sea filled with powerful enemies and unexpected challenges.
Usopp gets the spotlight
One of the more interesting choices in LEGO ONE PIECE is the decision to tell the story through Usopp.
Usopp is known for turning his experiences into much bigger stories, and this becomes part of the fun. He tells Tony Tony Chopper, the reindeer-human character who later joins the crew as its doctor, about the adventures of the Straw Hats.
That approach gives the special a different feel from a straightforward retelling. Viewers are not simply watching the same events again. They are seeing them through Usopp’s version of what happened, which leaves room for comedy and playful storytelling.
Familiar characters in LEGO form
The biggest attraction is likely to be seeing characters such as Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Tony Tony Chopper recreated as LEGO characters.
