Finding Emily review: A simple love story that turns into a campus-wide mess

By , August 31, 2026

Finding Emily is a 2026 British romantic comedy that follows Owen, a young musician and sound engineer who becomes determined to find a woman he meets at a party. The film mixes romance, comedy and the problems that can come with trying to find love in the age of social media.

Released in cinemas in 2026, the 111-minute film begins with what appears to be a straightforward romantic encounter. However, one small mistake soon turns Owen’s search for love into a much bigger problem.

Owen’s search for the mysterious Emily

Owen meets Fairy Emily at a party and is immediately drawn to her. Before they part ways, she gives him her phone number, leaving him excited about the possibility of seeing her again.

The excitement does not last long. When Owen tries to contact her, he realises that the number is missing one digit. Instead of accepting that he may never see her again, he decides to search for her.

His only clues are her first name and the university setting. There are hundreds of people named Emily, searching harder than he expected.

The situation changes when Owen meets Emily Raine, a psychology student. Unlike Owen, Emily Raine is not convinced that romantic love is as wonderful as people make it appear.

She is working on a university thesis about love and how people can behave irrationally when they fall for someone. Owen soon becomes useful to her research, although he does not know that he is being used as a case study.

The search gets out of control

Emily Raine agrees to help Owen find Fairy Emily. She gives him access to a list of students named Emily and encourages him to contact them.

What starts as a simple attempt to find one woman quickly becomes a campus problem.

Owen sends messages to the Emilys, hoping one of them will be the woman he met. Instead, the search attracts attention online and turns him into the subject of public criticism.

He is labelled as a stalker and becomes known around campus for his unusual search. His attempt to explain himself through a student podcast only makes matters more complicated when the discussion becomes public.

This is where the film becomes more than a simple love story. It looks at how quickly private matters can become public when social media gets involved.

Owen and Emily Raine grow closer

While Owen is still searching for Fairy Emily, his relationship with Emily Raine begins to change.

The two spend more time together and develop an unexpected friendship. Their conversations and shared experiences gradually make it clear that the search may not be leading Owen towards the person he first wanted.

The problem is that Emily Raine has not been completely honest with him. Owen eventually discovers that he was the subject of her thesis. Feeling betrayed, he cuts contact with her.

Meanwhile, Owen’s search for Fairy Emily finally reaches an answer. He discovers that the woman he knew as Fairy Emily is actually called Amelie. However, their eventual meeting does not turn out as he imagined, leaving Owen to reconsider what he really wanted from the search.

A different ending to the search

The film eventually brings Owen and Emily Raine back together.

Emily decides to admit her role in the situation and publicly speaks about what happened. During her university presentation, she also challenges the main idea behind her own thesis and admits how she feels about Owen.

For Owen, the moment helps him understand that his search was not really about finding a perfect stranger. It was about discovering where his feelings belonged. The two eventually reconcile and become a couple.

Finding Emily works best as a light romantic comedy rather than a serious love story. Its strongest part is the unusual way it turns a missing phone number into a much bigger story about relationships, social media and the difference between liking an idea of someone and actually knowing them.
