For many Kenyans, taking a break no longer has to mean waiting for an annual leave or planning an expensive holiday months in advance.

Short weekend getaways are increasingly becoming a preferred way to escape the routine, explore new places and recharge before returning to work or school on Monday.

Unlike traditional holidays that can require several days away from home, weekend trips offer the chance to travel on a Friday evening or Saturday morning and return on Sunday, making them easier to fit into increasingly busy schedules.

A break from the everyday routine

One of the biggest attractions of weekend getaways is the opportunity to temporarily step away from familiar surroundings.

For people spending most of their week in offices, businesses or classrooms, a change of scenery can provide a much-needed mental break.

Some travellers are opting for quiet stays surrounded by nature, while others prefer destinations where they can participate in activities such as hiking, sightseeing, swimming or simply relaxing away from the city.

The shorter duration also means travellers do not necessarily have to use several days of their annual leave to enjoy a holiday.

Keeping travel affordable

Cost is another factor behind the growing interest in shorter trips.

A two- or three-day getaway can allow travellers to control expenses by choosing destinations that are relatively close, comparing accommodation options and planning activities in advance.

For young Kenyans especially, the appeal is not always about luxury. The experience itself can be the attraction, whether that means discovering a new town, taking photographs, spending time with friends or enjoying a peaceful weekend away.

Social media has also made it easier for people to discover destinations they may not previously have considered, with travellers sharing scenic locations, accommodation options and activities online.

Making weekends count

The growing popularity of short getaways reflects a broader change in how people view leisure.

Instead of seeing travel as something reserved for major celebrations or long holidays, more people are incorporating small adventures into their regular routines.

For some, it may be a spontaneous road trip with friends. For others, it could be a quiet weekend spent somewhere outside the city.

As busy lifestyles leave many people with limited free time, the weekend is increasingly becoming an opportunity to pause, explore and return to everyday life feeling refreshed.
