Mosiria calls for CCTV in matatus following passenger harassment concerns

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has called for the installation of CCTV cameras in all matatus following rising concerns over passenger harassment.
The call comes after a viral video showing a woman stoning a matatu circulated widely on social media.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Mosiria said the woman involved had reported the incident after requesting her balance of Ksh 1,000 following her fare payment.
According to Mosiria, the situation escalated when the conductor and the woman exchanged words. “They exchanged words, he slapped her and ran away,” Mosiria said.
Mosiria called on the police to investigate and take action against all parties involved. “I call upon the police to investigate and take action against the three of them involved in this matter,” he said, referring to the individuals identified in the woman’s report.
He also highlighted broader concerns in public transport, noting that most conductors in public transport have this tendency of keeping people’s change and running away, pretending to be looking for loose money until some of their clients get tired of waiting.

Mosiria emphasised that gathering evidence in such cases is often difficult. “If you want evidence, then let all matatus be installed with CCTVs because many people are usually and intentionally harassed by matatu operators and they end up not getting justice,” he wrote.
He further underscored the seriousness of passenger safety. “Even some people have been thrown out of moving matatus, and some have even been killed, and nobody is talking about it. It is time we address this issue once and for all,” Mosiria said.
Mosiria stressed the importance of CCTV cameras in matatus to protect passengers. “CCTV cameras will provide evidence, deter misconduct, and protect commuters from harassment,” he said, urging authorities and stakeholders to implement measures that strengthen accountability across the public transport sector.
