Mosiria asks public to defend Nairobi CBD litter bins from vandals
By Paulette Mboga, April 6, 2026Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has called on residents to help protect litter bins in the Central Business District after cases of vandalism were reported.
He raised concerns after noting misuse of public dustbins, including incidents around the National Archives area. He said the bins are public property meant to serve everyone in the city.
Mosiria explained that the bins should be treated with care. He urged members of the public to take responsibility and help prevent damage whenever they see it happening. He said protecting public property is a shared duty.

“Please protect these litter bins/dustbins within the CBD, they belong to you, the people of Nairobi!” Mosiria said on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Call to stop destruction of public property
He added that residents should not remain silent when they see someone destroying or stealing the bins. According to him, quick action from the public can help reduce the rising cases of vandalism in the city centre.
“When you see someone vandalising these public assets, be the first to stop them,” Mosiria said.
Mosiria also expressed frustration over the repeated theft of dustbins in the CBD. He said the act has been happening despite ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness in the city. He noted that some people try to justify the behaviour, but he strongly disagrees.

“I have always advocated for what is right, and these are the same people who steal your dustbins,” Mosiria said.
He further addressed public opinions that sometimes excuse the theft of public items. He said some people argue that those involved are just trying to survive, but he dismissed that reasoning.
“Many will say, ‘pia wao wanatafuta,’ but the truth is, it is simply stealing; we cannot normalise it,” Mosiria said.
Mosiria insisted that protecting public assets should be a collective responsibility for all residents. He said that without public cooperation, efforts to maintain cleanliness and order in the CBD will continue to face challenges.
He urged Nairobi residents to stay alert and take pride in protecting the city’s infrastructure.
